Walking around on foot in Pelican Town takes forever and drives me nutty bonkers. Horses are much better. And you know what’s even better than regular horses, though? Modded horses. Here’s a bunch worth checking out.
1. Pegasus Horse
Check Out This Mod Pegasus in Greek mythology was Perseus’ flying steed. But now for the low, low price of no dollars, he can be yours! This winged wonder has a nice pink and white coloration – and he would be super fun on fairycore farms, if that’s your jazz. It maybe isn’t the most realistic design. But this is also a game where you can befriend little mochi ghost things to harvest your vegetables, and the local manic pixie dream girl munches rocks as a snack. So I’m not having that argument.
2. Horse Whistle
Check Out This Mod Remember what I said about realism in Stardew? Let’s throw even more of that to the wind, because this mod lets your horse teleport to you at the blow of a whistle. Forget where you left your horse? Me too, dude. So let’s make it not even a problem. This mod is honestly just so handy. Especially since Stardew has a pretty meh fast travel system. Pelican Town isn’t huge, but it’s tedious as heck.
3. Real Life Horses
Check Out This Mod They’re real life horses, except they’re in a game. So, like, based off real life horses… but they’re in a game that you, a real life human, are playing. Ok so really it’s just a fun retexture and recolor mod for horses in Stardew, all based on real horse breeds. So if you’re actually into realism then give this one a go.
4. Flame Horses
Check Out This Mod These horses are not real or based on real horses. Instead they’re flaming and on fire, which real horses should never be. And I can say that no horses were harmed in the making of this mod. But I don’t really want to think about the semantics of how riding an on-fire horse might go. Ultimately this one’s just aesthetically cool. Don’t overthink it.
5. Altaria Horse Replacer
Check Out This Mod There’s a surprising amount of Pokémon crossover in Stardew Valley mods. And it’s all fun, so I support it. This mod simply replaces the horse you get from Robin with sprites of Altaria from Pokémon. It’s cute, and it keeps the pixel art style of Stardew. So it doesn’t look as out of place as you’d expect a horse-sized Pokémon to look. Now if you could slurp it up into a Poke ball for easy peasy storage, that would be super cool.
6. Rainbow Unicorn Horse Replacer
Check Out This Mod Again, another pretty simple swap mod here for horses. This one offers recolors for the original horse to look like a unicorn with a rainbow tail and mane. Neat, right? Explore Pelican Town in style and show those walking noobs what wealth looks like. I’m not sure the ethics of using a unicorn as a farm animal. But it’s probably no worse than a horse, right? I wonder where PETA stands on this one…
7. Horse Flute Anywhere
Check Out This Mod Here’s another mod that lets you summon your horse from anywhere you like. But this time it uses a flute. This mod is also neater (and even better) than the other one, because you can summon your horse literally anywhere. Marnie’s house? Yeah. The mines? Go for it. Mr. Qi’s casino? Do it, the horse will clean everyone out at poker.
8. Redesigned Horse Running Animation
Check Out This Mod I have mad respect for modders that animate, because I still have no working understanding of how animation even works. Something like this seems so neat and complicated. And that’s why it deserves a spot on this list. The original vanilla animation for the horse is a little lackluster. On the flip side, this one spices things up a bit. Give it a download and see what you think!
9. Better Horses
Check Out This Mod These horses ARE better. They’re based on real life breeds and look super convincing. This mod creator helpfully lists photos of the IRL horses on Nexus Mods, so if you’re a big fan of horses you can compare & contrast. I’m sure you’ll get excited about the attention to detail here. I like how many options there are, too. And they aren’t just shades – they have all different coat patterns and manes, too!
10. Elle’s New Horses
Check Out This Mod Elle is a modder in the community who is frankly the GOAT of Stardew custom content. She makes all sorts of things, like this line of horse retextures. Inside this mod you’ll find lots of different breeds, and then under that you’ll find coloration options. She’s also made similar mods for dogs and cats in Stardew as well, if that’s something you’re into.
