Each game is a faithful retelling of the original Kanto story, but with updated graphics and some Gen 3 improvements. One of the biggest differences in FRLG is that some Pokémon from Gens 2 and 3 are also included! This means shaping your game-conquering team can be a lot more fun. And one type you’ll definitely want represented on your team is Psychic types. These Pokémon often possess amazing stats and a diverse yet powerful movepool. So let’s take a look at the best Psychic-types for your next FRLG adventure – and details about where you can get each one.
5. Slowking
Slowking possesses decent all-round stats, including a very high Special Attack, which is to be expected from any Psychic-type worth their salt. The only downside is the horrendously low Speed. And if you go for Slowking, it needs to learn Psychic, there’s no two ways about it. After that, Surf is a great choice for Water STAB. Moves like Flamethrower and Ice Beam will definitely pack a punch too – and even Earthquake should be considered due to Slowking’s passable Attack stat. How to catch: Catch Slowpoke in Seafoam Islands, Route 10, the Safari Zone, or in the pond in Celadon City. Then evolve into Slowbro and trade it while holding the King’s Rock item.
4. Exeggutor
This lovable tree comes equipped with a dual Grass/Psychic typing, which both helps and hinders Exeggutor. The typing results in 7 weaknesses. Ouch. However, this typing also powers up Solar Beam as a STAB move. If you learn Sunny Day, then using this will ensure Solar Beam doesn’t need a turn to charge up – and will even speed up Exeggutor in the process. Exeggutor also has a decent Special Attack in FRLG, as well as solid Attack, so you actually have a bit of freedom when it comes to a moveset. Psychic and Solar Beam are essential for sure. And if you end up also learning Sunny Day then you could fill the final slot with Synthesis, Sludge Bomb, Ancient Power, or Uproar. How to catch: Catch Exeggcute in the Safari Zone and evolve it with a Leaf Stone.
3. Jynx
This problematic Pokémon is dual Ice/Psychic, creating a total of 6 weaknesses to deal with. And considering Jynx is fairly frail in terms of Defense, it’s definitely something to look out for. But Jynx actually has great Speed. And coupled with its high Special Attack, it actually is a prime candidate for Special Sweeper. Ice beam and Psychic are the two big STAB moves, and after that you could opt for Shadow Ball and Water Pulse for extra type coverage. How to catch: an NPC in Celadon City will trade you a Jynx for a Poliwhirl.
2. Alakazam
Alakazam has terrible HP, Defense, and Attack. But it is absolutely stacked in terms of Special Attack, Special Defense, and Speed – all the things that a Special Sweeper requires. Alakazam will almost always go first. And it will almost always KO its opponent with one hit. Learning Psychic is a no brainer here. After that, you could teach it Calm Mind if for some reason you don’t think your Special Attack is high enough… Interestingly, the moves Fire Punch, Ice Punch, and Thunder Punch are classified as Special moves in Gens 1-3. And since Alakazam can learn all 3, you could turn it into a great jack of all types. How to catch: Catch Abra from Route 24 or 25 (or from the Game Corner), then level up to 16 to evolve to Kadabra and trade it to evolve to Alakazam.
1. Mewtwo
This monster rightfully sits at the top of the list when it comes to most powerful Pokémon in FireRed and LeafGreen. Mewtwo has exceptional stats – and is no slouch in any of them. Mewtwo only needs Psychic, but it benefits from an extensive movepool that it can fully utilize to cover any type necessary. Just like Alakazam, Mewtwo can learn Calm Mind too – although it isn’t really needed. Instead you could give it Recover, Toxic, and Protect if you’re the ultimate sadist. But if you just want to obliterate everything in your path, then consider teaching it moves like Thunderbolt, Earthquake, Ice Beam, Flamethrower, or Shadow Ball. Only downside here is that Mewtwo is only available in the post-game (without cheats). How to catch: First, beat the Elite 4 and get the National Dex from Oak. Fix Celio’s Network Machine by finding the Ruby and Sapphire, and then finally enter Cerulean Cave and Mewtwo will be right at the end ready to battle.
